What do Star Wars, Zen, the Grateful Dead, and Marin have in common? Join author David Perlis for a fascinating look at the creative revolution that put Marin at the heart of American culture.

In Morning in Marin: Zen, Drugs, and Ewoks on the California Coast, David Perlis traces the remarkable story of Marin County’s cultural transformation from the postwar years through the 1980s. Drawing on archival research and dozens of firsthand interviews, he explores the people, places, and ideas behind this extraordinary era.

From Sausalito houseboats and back-to-the-land communes to the artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, and spiritual seekers who called Marin home, Perlis reveals how a small county north of the Golden Gate became a powerful force in American culture.

Books will be available for purchase, with a signing following the talk.

Schedule:

  • 5:30 pm - Wine & Cheese Reception
  • 6:00 pm - Author Talk, followed by a book signing

David Perlis is a writer, musician, and filmmaker from Marin County, California. For nearly a decade he co-hosted the late night talk show Night People on WFMU. He has worked for the New York Public Library and the American Museum of Natural History. He now lives in Corrales, New Mexico. Morning in Marin is his first book.
